Background

Since 2015, approximately 100 Syrian refugee families have resettled in the town of Ardrossan due to the ongoing war in Syria. Unfortunately, these families currently do not have a designated space to gather for community events or prayer. Therefore, my project aims to provide a community center for these families to come together and connect with one another. This center will not only serve as a physical space for communal activities, but also as a hub for resources and support for the families. By creating this space, we hope to promote a sense of belonging and inclusion for the Syrian refugee families in the Ardrossan community.

Discovery

The initial phase of this project involved conducting research and developing a comprehensive understanding of the project's objectives. The primary goal was to increase awareness and generate empathy among potential donors to support the restoration of the church building. In order to achieve this, extensive research was conducted on the town of Ardrossan, where the church is located. The research revealed that the town's main attractions included the harbour, fishing, churches, and the natural landscape. Based on these findings, the project was designed to incorporate these elements in a meaningful way, ensuring that the restored church would remain an important and valued part of the town's cultural heritage.

Define

The concept developed for the church focused on showcasing its potential uses and the benefits it will provide to the community once fully restored. The artwork aimed to convey the experience and value of the building, rather than just its physical appearance, to engage potential donors. The artwork incorporated elements that are significant to Ardrossan, and a distinct style was developed to further explore and enhance the project.

Develop

During the development phase, I experimented with various textures, colors, and styles to bring the concept to life. I decided to use a sunset setting and incorporated images of community members entering the church and children playing around it to showcase the value the church holds for the community. Additionally, I created a user experience journey for the brochure and mapped out how it could be used at events.

Deliver

For the end brochure design I incorporated the artwork throughout the booklet. I decided to also speak a little bit about the history of Ardrossan and the church which can help create ore sympathy and value for the donors. I also explained what it would mean for the people in Ardrossan if this church was restored and how it could bring much value to them.
